About IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur had been started in 1960 by the Indian Government. The institute commenced its operations in December 1959 within a room located in the canteen building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute situated at the Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. In 1963, The institute relocated to its current site, situated along the Grand Trunk Road near the Kalyanpur locality within Kanpur district. Achyut Kavinde designed the campus in a modernist architectural style.

Essential Qualification for Vacancy

The candidates, who are eligible for this post must have completed their M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology (with RCI license) with 1st class and along with not less than 2 years of relevant experience

Applicants must have accomplished their M.A. in Clinical Psychology / M.Sc Clinical Psychology / MA in Psychology (with Psychopathology / Clinical Psychology / Abnormal Psychology as one of the subjects) with 1st Class along with 5 years of relevant experience.

Available Seats for the Vacancy

Currently, IIT Kanpur is having 6 seats for the recruitment of Assistant Counsellors. Out of 6 seats, 3 seats will be reserved only for Other Backward Cast (OBC) Candidates. 1 seat is available for Schedule Cast (SC) Candidate and 1 seat will be for Economically Weak Student (EWS) Candidate. The remaining 1 is an unreserved seat.

Emolument Details

As per official notice of IIT Kanpur, the post of Assistant Counsellor falls under level 10 pay scale. The Consolidated Emolument of the position is from ₹56,100/- to ₹1,77,500/-

Desirable Skills and Experiences

  1. Training in Counselling techniques and/or any therapeutic module
  2. Experience in counseling students of highly competitive residential Institutes of higher learning
  3. Administrative experience in relevant counseling service set-up
  4. Experience in counseling of substance abuse cases
  5. Writing, reading, and speaking proficiency in English and other Indian Languages

Responsibilities of the Post

After joining the institute, the counselor will be responsible for doing Clinical counseling duties as indicated by the head, institute counseling service at IIT Kanpur or under the orders of any competent authority of the institute.

In Regular, the daily responsibilities will be as follows:

  • listening to students’ academic, emotional, social, and behavioral concerns in a supportive and nonjudgmental manner
  • To create, oversee, and support counseling programs at IIT Kanpur
  • To offer referrals to external resources for mental health, substance abuse, or vocational activities and maintain liaison with the IIT Kanpur’s Health Center
  • To report student issues to the appropriate authorities if neglect or abuse is suspected
  • supporting and advising the undergraduate and postgraduate student teams of the Institute Counselling Service
  • attend exigencies at all hours

Cognitive Science Department of IIT Kanpur

Cognitive Science explores the characteristics of the human mind, including its origins, nature, and functions. Researchers and practitioners in cognitive science come from a variety of conventional academic disciplines. Computer scientists, psychologists, neuroscientists, linguists, and philosophers have all been important in bringing together their knowledge to better understand how the mind works. Right now, these insights are really helpful as we work on creating artificial systems that can perform things like humans.

The Cognitive Science program at IIT Kanpur wants to use our institute’s technical skills and resources to make new discoveries about how the mind works. We do this by using both computers and studying how people behave.

Application Fee Details

The Eligible candidates will have to pay the application fee via the options of net banking and debit/ credit cards. Applicants will not receive refund of application fee in any case after payment. The fee to apply for the Assistant Counsellor position is Rs. 1000 for general category people. SC/ST applicants will receive a 50% discount on the application fee, means they will only need to pay Rs. 500. PwD and female applicants are exempt from paying any application fees. In addition to application fee, candidates will also have to pay the online bank’s/transaction charges + Service tax, if any.

Important Notes:

  • The Eligible and Desirous applicants can only apply through Online Mode on or before October 16, 2023, up to 5:00 PM by visiting the institute’s website (https://oag.iitk.ac.in/Oa_Rec_Pg/)
  • SC/ST and OBCs-NCL candidates must furnish a valid Caste Certificate in the format specified by the Central Government when requested
  • Priority will be given to Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
  • People applying for the job should make sure they meet the requirements and have their original certificates ready to show that the information they gave in the online application form is true. They may need to show these certificates later in the hiring process
  • Shortlisted candidates for this job will have to do a written test and/or give a talk in front of experts. After that, they will have a personal interview
