BA Psychology, B.Sc Psychology, and BA Applied Psychology Difference

Psychology is one of the most popular subjects to opt for graduation. However, during the admission, what students might struggle with is understanding the difference between Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Psychology.

While there is no such difference between the syllabus and course components, a BSc in Psychology is more similar to a BA in Applied Psychology. The basic difference between the two programmes lies in the classification, a BSc/BA Applied Psychology degree provides students with more practical training than the BA Psychology.

Benefits of a BSc Psychology / Applied Psychology

Psychology may consider as behavioral science, thus understanding Psychology needs a good knowledge of Biology because both subjects deal with human beings. “In fact, having knowledge of Mathematics also helps because it gets easier to deal with stats and research”

Also, Psychology under Science discipline, allows universities and colleges to receive more funding from the govt. for the laboratory/practical experiments. “Whether it is a BA degree in Psychology or a BSc degree in Psychology, a certain amount of laboratory teaching comes with both of them.

Benefits of a BA Psychology

If you have a keen interest in the field of psychology and you want to discover the other options in-depth as well let’s say health and nutrition. It is perfect for students who are considering specialized psychology fields such as health psychology and forensic psychology.

If you choose this degree can also opt to go later on to further study in Law, Social Work, Counseling, Education, Journalism, Political Science, and Business.

In the end, both the degrees provide you the same recognition and value after the completion of the degree and they both pave the path to the master’s degree. Although, a B.A. degree will more dedicated to developing communication and writing skills. Whereas a B.Sc. will concentrate in helping you see things more from an analytical and practical perspective.

JOB PROSPECTS

To work under psychologist or psychological counsellor or even a clinical psychologist, it is mandatory for students to attain a master’s degree. When candidates reach the postgraduate level, irrespective of their BA or BSc degree, the postgraduate syllabus remains the same. Students from the non-psychology background can also eligible for admission to PG in Psychology.
Several branches of Psychology are there such as cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, organisational psychology, clinical psychology, behavioural psychology, biopsychology, counselling psychology, to name a few. In order to get a suitable job, students need to pick an area of specialisation at the PG level. “When it comes to jobs, the criteria is a postgraduate degree with a preferred area of specialisation. It hardly matters whether a candidate has done a BA or BSc degree.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical psychology and Counselling psychology are both associated with the assessment and treatment of people suffering from psychological problems. They share a lot in common, however, they should not be confused.

Clinical psychologists have the ability to deal with patients with serious issues like chronic psychological disorders, even though they might deal with people having personal crises as well. They are qualified to do so as they need to complete their M.Phil in Clinical Psychology or PsyD to practice. Because of this, they also have access to a wider number of tests and a wider scope of work.

On the other hand, Counselling Psychologists deal with less serious issues, like career counselling, adjustment, relationship problems, stress, etc. They can pursue this after their Master’s degree, not requiring further qualification.

Another difference between both fields is their place of employment. Clinical psychologists usually work in clinics and hospitals. In contrast, counselling psychologists work in schools, colleges, or counselling services.

Finally finished with your Final exams? Post-graduation admissions on your mind? On 3rd June, Delhi University released applications for their Master’s courses in Psychology. DU is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in India. It offers 2 year courses in MA Psychology and MA Applied Psychology, consisting of four semesters. The course includes fieldwork, practical’s, and papers of your choosing out of up to 15 options each semester. The North Campus offers M.A. Psychology with a capacity of 108 students in each batch while South Campus offers M.A. in Applied Psychology with about 40 seats.

The process of application along with fees payment is entirely online for all categories and courses through a link found on their website, www.du.ac.in. But remember that you have to apply for each course you want to, separately.

There are two ways to apply for the course of your choosing, whether it be MA. Applied Psychology or M.A. Psychology- Through an entrance test or merit based admission. For both campuses 50% of these seats are given to merit based admitted students and the other half are for the entrance test based admitted.

For the entrance test, you require either a minimum of 55% aggregate in a BA psychology course of DU or a 60% in any graduate course in any DU or DU recognised college. This provides an opportunity for all those students who have not studied psychology in their graduation. This entrance exam, organised by NTA, consists of a 100 multiple choice Questions with a maximum of 400 marks that can be achieved along with negative marking of -1. This exam is likely to happen between June 22nd and July 2nd.  After this, based on your performance, you will be called for an interview which is usually held in the first week of July.

The second way you can apply for the course is merit based. This will be based on the aggregate marks BA psychology or applied psychology course. The minimum eligibility criteria is a 60% aggregate in a BA course of Psychology course from DU. This is a part of direct admission and therefore doesn’t involve an interview.

But keep in mind that you can apply for the course in both or either category.
